Abstract
Phytoestrogens (PE) are estrogenic compounds naturally present in plants or that arises from bacterial or fungal metabolism of plants precursor compounds. The cmpounds of phytoestrogen have been identified in vegetables, fruits and whole grains commonly consumed by humans. In several studies that we provide a synopsis of the literature relating principally to the effect of phytoestrogens, the dietary phytoestrogen play an important role in prevention of menopaual symtoms, osteoporosis, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Although there currently are no recommendations for individual phytoestrogens, there may be great benefit in increase consumption of plant foods, especially in post-menopausal women.
